Sermon on the Mountain XII

Judgement

And if - any mischief follow, - then thou shalt give life - for life, Eye - for eye, - tooth - for tooth, - hand - for hand, - foot - for foot,  Burning - for burning, wound - for wound, stripe - for stripe.
*****
Now there-fore swear unto me here by God that thou - wilt not deal falsely with me, - nor with my son, nor with my son's - son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast so-journed.
*****
If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
Then both the men, - between - whom the controversy is, shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
  And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away - from among you.
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall hence-forth commit no more any such evil among you.
*****
For God doth know that in the day - ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
*****

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye - for an eye,

*****
Where-fore do I take - my flesh - in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand? Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways be-fore him.
*****

and a tooth for a tooth:

*****
And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, - eye for eye, tooth for tooth,
And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become - as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest - he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, - and eat, - and live for ever:

hand - for hand,
*****
But the dove found no rest - for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: - then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
*****

foot - for foot.

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

*****
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins,
*****

And if any man will sue thee at the law, - and take away thy coat,

*****
and clothed them.
*****
let him have thy cloke also.

Sermon on the Mountain XI

His

After
(aftr)prep. 1.   Behind in place or order: Z comes after Y. Next to or lower than in order or importance. .. .3. Concerning: asked after you. 4. Subsequent in time to; at a later time than: come after dinner. . .  6. Following continually: year after year. . . .. 1. Behind; in the rear. 2. At a later or subsequent time; afterward: three hours after; departed shortly after.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit -  after - his kind,

*****
Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
*****
Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling? As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work: So am I - made to possess months of vanity, and wear-i- so-me - nights are appointed - to me.

*****
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took  - one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh - instead - thereof;

For God, said she, hath appointed - me an-other seed - instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, - for that - he also - is flesh: - yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Behold, - all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as no-thing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

*****
And God saw - that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

*****
Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: - they that war against thee shall be as no-thing, and as a thing of nought.

*****
And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?
Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

mischief
(mischif)n. 1. Behavior that causes discomfiture or annoyance in another. 2. An inclination or a tendency to play pranks or cause embarrassment. 3. One that causes minor trouble or disturbance: The child was a mischief in school. 4. Damage, destruction, or injury caused by a specific person or thing: The broken window was the mischief of vandals. 5. The state or quality of being mischievous.

There-fore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
*****
And God made the firmament,
wickedness of man was great

And in - that day - thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.

Thy hands have made me and fashioned me:

Thou know-est -that I am - not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand. - Thine hands have made me and fashioned me - together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.
*****

None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
*****
made he a work-man, and brought her unto the man.
*****
Woe unto you, when all men shall speak - well of you! - for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
*****
This is - my covenant, which ye shall keep, - between - me and you and thy seed - after thee; Every man - child among you shall be circumcised.
*****
If men strive, and - hurt a work-man with child, - so - that her - fruit depart - from her, and - no mischief - follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

And if - any mischief follow, - then thou shalt give life - for life, Eye - for eye, - tooth - for tooth, - hand - for hand, - foot - for foot,  Burning - for burning, wound - for wound, stripe - for stripe.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye - for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Sermon on the Mount X

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament:

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, - men of renown:

And they gathered themselves together - against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them,

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat:

And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

and the Lord - is among them: where-fore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?

And the earth was without form, and void;
andarkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And when Moses heard it, - he fell upon his face:

And Job spake, and said, Let the day perish wherein I was born,

And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even tomorrow the Lord will shew who are his, and who is holy; - and will cause him to come near unto him: - even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.

This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;
And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the Lord tomorrow: and it shall be that the man - whom the Lord doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

And Moses said unto Ko-rah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:

Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you - from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself - to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand be-fore the congregation to minister unto them?

And the servant had said, It is my master: there-fore she took a veil, and covered herself.

And she a-rose, and went away, and laid by her veil - from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

And he hath brought thee near to him, and all - thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood - also?

For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:

Is it a small thing - that thou hast brought us up out of a land that flow-eth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thy-self al-together a prince over us?

Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that flow-eth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men?
we will not come up.

And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the Lord, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

And Moses said unto Ko-rah, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow:

And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his censer, - two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.
And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense there-on, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.

And Ko-rah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation.

And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
Separate your-selves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye - for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
