Sermon on the Mountain XXVII

Awake, awake

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit - after -his kind,

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him;

male and female created he - them.

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid them-selves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

And Cain went out - from  the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, - on the east of Eden.

And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, - and Tidal king of nations;

That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth -and the heavens,

All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.

Unto the work-man he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow - and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and – he - shall - rule over thee.

Then the Lord rained upon Sodom - and up-on Gomorrah – brim-stone - and fire from the Lord - out of heaven;

And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

But his wife looked back - from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house;

If ye will be as we - be, that every male of you - be circumcised;

Then will we give our daughters un-to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful meat.

Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should prolong my life? Is my strength - the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass? Is not my help - in me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?

Ye can-not serve God - and mammon.

For it is not a vain thing for you; -  because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

There-fore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life,

And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation – there-of: The three baskets are three days:

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh - lift up thy head - from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds - shall eat thy flesh - from - off thee.

And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:

But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted - to them.

Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

If ye be willing and obedient, - ye shall eat - the good of the land:

what ye shall eat,

God layeth up his iniquity - for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it. His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

For what pleasure hath he in his house - after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst? Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

or what ye shall drink;

Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall - they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

For, behold, the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall - no more cover her slain.

nor yet for your body,  

The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not - I searched out.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

          Art thou not it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

          Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

          I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou should-est be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;

          And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

          The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.

          But I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name.

          And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

          Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

          There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
