He
Unto Shem
also, the father of all the children of
Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder,
even to him were children born.
*
And
his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
*
The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.
And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.
There
was a man in the land of Uz, whose
name was Job; and that man was perfect - and upright, and one
that
feared God, and eschewed evil.
And
there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
His
substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five
hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that
this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
*****
And
the ra-in was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
In
the selfsame
day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
**
Fear not: for I
am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the
west;
I
will say to the north,
Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons
from
far, and my
daughters from
the ends of the earth;
Even
every one
that
is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory,
I have formed him; yea,
I
have made him.
**
*****
And
his sons
went
and feasted in their houses,
every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
And
it was so,
when the days
of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning,
and offered burnt offerings according to the
number of them all:
*****
And
the Lord God said unto the serpent,
Because thou hast done this, thou
art cursed above
all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days
of thy life:
*
And
unto Adam he
said,
Because thou hast hearkened
unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee,
saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: - cursed is the ground
- for
thy sake; in sorrow
shalt thou eat of it all
the days of thy life;
**
And
none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say,
I have burned part of it in the fire;
yea,
also I
have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I
make
the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned
him aside, that he
cannot
deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my
right hand?
Remember
these, O
Jacob
and Israel; for thou art my
servant: I have
formed thee; thou art my servant:
O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
I
have
blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me;
for I have redeemed thee.
*****
for Job said,
It
may
be that my sons have sinned, and cursed
God in their hearts. Thus did Job
continually.
*****
And
Cush begat Nimrod: he began
to
be a mighty one
in
the earth.

Now
there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also am-ong them.
And
the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?
Then Satan answered the Lord, and
said, From
going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And
the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job,
that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright
man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then
Satan answered the Lord, and said,
Doth
Job fear God for nought?
Hast
not thou made an
hedge
about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work
of
his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
But
put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he
will
curse thee to thy face.
And
the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand.
So
Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder,
even to him were children born.

And
there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
And
there came a messenger unto Job,
and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
And
the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away;
yea,
they
have slain the servants with the
edge of the sword; and I only
am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was yet speaking, there came
also another, and said, The fire of
God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and
consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While
he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made
out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea,
and
slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While
he
was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were
eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:
And,
behold, there came a great wind from
the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Then
Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground,
and worshipped,
And
said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and
naked shall I return thither:
the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
In all this Job sinned
not, nor charged God foolishly.
*****
He
was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty
hunter before the Lord.
And
the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and
Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
***
And
the whole earth was of one language,
and of one speech.
And
it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east,
that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
And
they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly.
And they had brick for stone,
and slime had they for mortar.
And
they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose
top may reach unto heaven; and let
us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
*****
And it came to pass in
the days of Amraphel king of Shinar,
Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
That
these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and
with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim,
and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
*****
And God called
the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas:
*****
All
these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
Twelve years they
served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth
year they rebelled.
And
in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer,
and the kings that were with him, and smote the
Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh
Kiriathaim,
And the Horites in
their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.
And
they returned, and came to
Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and
smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.
And
there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king
of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;
With Chedorlaomer the
king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king
of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
And the vale of Siddim
was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
And
they took all the goods of Sodom and
Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
And
they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
*****
As
for me, behold, my
covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
*****
And
there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew;
for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of
Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these
were confederate with Abram.
And
when Abram heard that his brother
was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred
and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.
And
he divided himself
against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote
them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is
on the left hand of Damascus.
And
he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the workmen also, and the people.
