Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also am-ong them.
And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?
Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God - for nought?
Hast - not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
And the Lord said unto Satan, -Behold, - all that he hath is in thy power; . . .
***
And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
***
. . . only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
***
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he al-so is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
***
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
***
Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, -after - that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? - even so will I do likewise.

The reproving words of Elihu

Furthermore Elihu answered and said, Hear my words, O ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge. For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat. Let us choose to us judgment: let us know among ourselves what is good.
For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment. Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression. What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. . .
*****
And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do - to me?
***
And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
***
For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world? If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; . . .
***
And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
*
And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
*
And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood;
*
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.
*****

. . . All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words. Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
***
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the mid-st of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the work-man, Ye shall not surely die:
***
Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, -after - that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? - even so will I do likewise.
Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
*****
Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye - even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

Sermon on the Mountain XL

Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.
They sacrificed unto devils, - not to God; - to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
Of the Rock that begat thee - thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.
***
Then was RAheme led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,
***
From that time RAheme began to prTeach, and to say,
Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
And RAheme, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called, and his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
***
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God - took him.
***
Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
***
And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed - also be numbered.
Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
***
And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
***
And I will make my covenant between - me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
***
And he saith unto them, - Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

Or if - he ask a fish, will - he give him a serpent?
If ye then, being evil, - know how to give good gifts unto your children, - how much more shall your Father which is in heaven - give good things to them that ask him?

Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

Sermon on the Mountain XXXIX

What man

For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: there-fore she took a veil, and covered herself
***
And she put her widow's garments off - from her, and covered her with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
***
The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth - for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed - on her.
Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were - more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire:
Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.
They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.

***
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth - with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
***
Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
***
And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
***
And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
***
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.
And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is - without doubt rent in pieces.
And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for - his son many days.

Or what man is there of you, whom if . . .

The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place. For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place. Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone.
He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death. The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men.
As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. The stones of it are the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. There is a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen: The lions whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it. He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots. He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light. But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
