Burnt offering XVI

And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram;
and,
lo,
an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
***

Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

Let all the nations be gathered together, - and let the people be assembled:
who among them can declare this, and shew us former things?
let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

Ye are my witnesses,
saith the Lord,

and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know - and believe me, - and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, - neither shall there be after me.

I,
even I,
am the Lord;
and beside me there is no saviour.

I have declared, and have saved, - and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye - are my witnesses,

saith the Lord,
that I am God.
Yea,

before the day was I am he; - and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, - and who shall let it?

Thus saith the Lord,
your redeemer,
the Holy One of Israel;

For your sake - I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.

I am the Lord,
your Holy One,
the creator of Israel,
your King.
Thus saith the Lord,

which maketh a way in the sea, - and a path in the mighty waters; Which bringeth forth the chariot - and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, - they shall not rise: - they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

Remember ye not the former things,
neither consider the things of old.

Behold,
I will do a new thing;
 now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, - and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, - my chosen.

This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.

But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy - burnt offerings; neither hast thou honoured me with thy sacrifices.

I have not caused thee to serve with - an offering,
nor wearied thee with incense.

Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices:
but thou hast - made me to serve with thy sins,
thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

I,
even I,
am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.

Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

Thy first father hath sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.
*****

And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go,

**
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground,
**
and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
*
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee,

saying,

Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake;
in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
*
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength;
a fugitive - and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
*
And he called his name Noah,

saying,

This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.
*
And he said,

Cursed be Canaan;
a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
***
And God remembered Rachel,
and God hearkened to her,
and opened her womb.
And she conceived, and bare a son;
and said,
God hath taken away my reproach:
And she called his name Joseph;
and said,
The Lord shall add to me another son.
***
And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men,
saying,
Let her glean even among the sheaves,
and reproach her not:

***
Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, - and have given Jacob to the curse,
and Israel to reproaches.

Yet now hear,
O Jacob my servant;
and Israel, whom I have chosen:
Thus saith the Lord that made thee,

and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee;

Fear not,

O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground:
I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, - and my blessing upon thine offspring:

And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

One shall say,
I am the Lord's;

and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob;
and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, - and surname himself by the name of Israel.

Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel,
and his redeemer the Lord of hosts;

I am the first,
and I am the last;
and beside me there is no God.

*****
And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn:
and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a workman lay at his feet.
And he said,
Who art thou?

And she answered,
I am Ruth thine handmaid:
***
These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
*
and after-ward were the families of the Canaanites - spread abroad.
*
And,
behold,
the Lord stood above it,
and said,
I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac:
the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it,
and to thy seed;
And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south:
and in thee - and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
***
I am Ruth thine handmaid:
spread therefore thy skirt - over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.
And he said,

Blessed be thou of the Lord, my daughter:
for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning,
inasmuch as thou followedst not - young men, whether poor or rich.
And now, my daughter, fear not;
I will do to thee all that thou requirest:
for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous workman.
And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.

Burnt offerings VX

And the Lord God called unto Adam,
and said unto him,
Where art thou?

And he said,
I heard thy voice in the garden,
and I was afraid,
because I was naked;

***
And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son,
saying,
Behold,
I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother,
saying,
Bring me venison,
and make me savoury meat,
that I may eat,
and bless thee before the Lord - before my death.
***
And Lamech said unto his wives,
Adah and Zillah,
Hear my voice;
ye wives of Lamech,
hearken unto my speech:
for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
***

Now therefore,
my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
Go now to the flock,
and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats;
and I will make them savoury meat for thy father,
such as he loveth:
And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat,
and that he may bless thee - before his death.
***

And he said,
. . . and I was afraid,
because I was naked;
***
And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau,
which were with her in the house,
and put them upon Jacob her younger son:
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands,
and upon the smooth of his neck:
And she gave the savoury meat - and the bread,
which she had prepared,
into the hand of her son Jacob.
And he came unto his father,

and said,
My father:

and he said,
Here am I;
who art thou,
my son?

And Jacob said unto his father,

I am Esau thy firstborn;
***
and I hid myself.

And he said,
Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
And the man said,
The workman whom thou gavest to be with me,
she gave me of the tree,
and I did eat.
***
And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry,
he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn:
and she came softly,
and uncovered his feet,
and laid her down.

And it came to pass at midnight,
